Find the Harmony

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.” -Anonymous

Have you ever heard a musical composition that has moved you? Have you ever felt cold chills when you've heard a choir sing in perfect harmony? Have you ever listened to a song that has made you feel angry? Have you ever felt feelings of doubt or depression after listening to music?

Music moves the very center of our souls. Music that uplifts and is happy leads us to feel enthusiastic, yet music that degrades and destructs can lead us to feel as much. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is much the same. When we keep the commandments, we bring our lives in closer harmony with the Lord and fill our souls with delight. When we don't follow the ways of Christ and become tone deaf, then the melody of life becomes a song full of scrambled notes.

I remember being in choir at my high school. Sometimes we were really really good, but every once in a while we would lose sight of the conductor. When this happened we would come in at the wrong times, lose pitch, or make other mistakes that would take the beauty of the tones and replace them with horrendous mismatches of sound that would make your ears bleed. What was the difference between sounding great and being a disgrace to the musical community? It all depended on us as the choir and keeping our focus on the conductor.

In life, the Lord is the conductor. He has given us the tools and knowledge we need to follow him. When we lose sight of him, we make mistakes. Just as when we lost sight of the conductor of the choir, it was important that we refocused and returned our voices to where they needed to be. When we lose sight of the Lord, it is critical that we repent and turn our lives back over to him. He can and will make more out of our lives than we can just as the teachings of the music conductor can make more out of the performance than we could alone.

If our "eye [is] single to His glory" (Mormon 8:15) and we strive to bring our lives in Harmony with his teachings, the spirit of the Lord will fill our souls with light and happiness. Though life is never easy, following the teachings of the Savior will give us the hope that it will all be worth it.
